Greg Pierce - Director
Greg Pierce brings a life time of camping experience to
the Director's role at Birchmont. A third-generation camp
director, Greg majored in education and history at Wittenburg
College. Greg is a member and past president of the Long
Island Association of Private Schools and Day Camps; a member
of the American Camping Association;
and resides on the Public Guidance Service. He is also an

that have typified the Birchmont Experience for half a century.
Laura
Pierce - Director
Laura Pierce's affiliation with the Pierce Family began
when she was a five-year-old camper at Pierce Country Day
Camp. At the age of nine, she spent her first summer at
Birchmont, where she continued through the years until until
she became part of Birchmont's fine staff. Now Laura shares
the responsibility as Co-Director of Birchmont.
While attending Great Neck South High School, Laura was
varsity captain of her volleyball and tennis teams. After
winning the Nassau County First Doubles Championship, she
joined the Birchmont tennis staff in 1976. Laura returned
for several summers before becoming group leader of the
senior girls.
Laura is a graduate of Tufts University and the University
of Arizona. Before joining Birchmont year-round, Laura was
Director of performing Arts and Variety Programs at ABC's
"Arts and Entertainment Network" in Manhattan
and Director of Program Acquisition at Cablevision's "Bravo,"
an award-winning cultural arts channel.
Greg
Howes - Assistant Director
One of the first people you are likely to come in contact
with at Camp Birchmont, whether inquiring about a job or
space for your camper, is another Greg - Assistant Director
Greg Howes. Howes has served year round in this capacity
for the last six years, processing all new camper leads
from phone call to in home appointment; all prospective
staff from initial application to camp; and of course answering
all of the many inquiries as well as parent, camper and
staff concerns throughout the nine month "off season"!
In addition, Howes, a Cum Laude graduate in Education and
two sport athlete (soccer, baseball) at Division II Springfield
College (MA), also serves as Birchmont's Athletic Director.
In this role he oversees all aspects of the on camp sports
program, making sure every camper has the opportunity to
flourish in a positive environment conducive to fun and
success as well as scheduling and directing the intercamp
athletic program versus other camps in the region. Well
versed in all aspects of camping, a long standing member
of the American Camping Association, and a teacher, coach
and athletic director with over 12 years of experience,
Howes visits with as many as 50 families a year as a representative
of the entire Birchmont Family - a role he is extremely
proud of. So whether you phone, fax, e-mail or just drop
your camper off at the buses this summer, chances are you'll
be met by a smile and a handshake from the man known around
camp as "Greg number two"! If you have any questions
or concerns - just ask him!
Tom Liddy - Associate Director
"I feel very fortunate to say that throughout my life I have had two families who know me very well, my own family of course and the Pierce family. My association with the Pierces started in 1956 as a six year-old camper. I have to thank my parents, who worked second jobs to see to it that I would be able to spend summers with the Pierce family. My parents were impressed from the start, when on a snowy day, Buddy Pierce, Greg's father took us on a tour of the camp. The camp of course looked bleak, covered by a winter blanket of snow. Yet, as we passed each activity, Buddy painted a picture of what camp would be like. You see, for Buddy, his brothers and now their sons directing the Pierce camps is a commitment that allows them to intimately bring to life what they live and believe in. As soon as my camping days were over, I worked as an equipment boy, towel boy, counselor, head counselor, and facilities supervisor at the day camp. In 1989 Greg and Laura afford me the opportunity to join them at Birchmont as an assistant director, a position that I was pleased to serve in until 1996. Since then, I have been the associate director for the camp. This position affords me the opportunity to fine tune program for the campers on a weekly basis. The family atmosphere of Pierce Camp Birchmont extends to the management style fostered by Greg and Laura. All the directors and the rest of the administration work collaboratively to respond to the ever changing needs of the campers and staff. During the year, I work as an assistant principal for the Syosset Central School District. Prior to becoming an assistant principal, I taught mathematics, for eighteen years I was a chair of mathematics and I coached football wresting and lacrosse, all in Syosset of course. You have to know an impression was made on you, when as a junior in college, studying to become a civil engineer, I realized, that most likely that coming summer would be my last opportunity to work for the Pierces. I took inventory of what I wanted to do as a career and realized that I really enjoyed working with children. During the Spring semester I changed to a curriculum that would eventually lead to a teaching career. A decision I have never regretted. There are few good people working with the Pierces who can say they knew founder, Pop Pierce and who worked for both the second and third generations. Everyone should have had the opportunities I have had."
